Flying back from the UK takes around 24 hours in the air. For some reason this time round I decided to watch recently released movies. Probably a bad move, as I hate flying.
The Golden Compass - nice special effects, soso story, not especially enthralling central performance. Kidman wasn't bad.
Cassandra's Dream - Quite possibly Woody Allen's worst script ever - the dialogue is wooden and he must have a tin ear for British phrases. Maybe they just adlibbed. (80 minutes)
Transformers - big noisy and dumb. I switched it off after 20 minutes.
The Invasion - unremittingly awful remake of Invasion of the body snatchhers, in which at one point ole Botox face (Kidman again) has to act as if she has no emotions. At various points the script made no sense to me.
I am Legend - fairly daft story, but Smith was OKish, and the zombies (and special effects generally) were good. Pathetic ending.
No Country for Old Men - OK, Woody and Jones were only on autopilot, but the creepy antihero in this one was brilliant. I don't know why it got so many (or indeed any) Oscars.
"Wit"., which I saw on TV a few months back - fancy watching someone dying of cancer? Brilliant one hander starring Emma Thompson. Total budget $274
